Summer camps are fun filled days of activities in the community during the summer holidays. Activities include pottery, crafts, music, relaxation and lots of adventures! The days are filled with the child's interests and include the very important Camp Party! There are plenty of opportunities for the development of social skills and each child is encouraged to be as independent as possible and to verbalise their requests where possible.



SUMMER CAMP ASSISTANT’S DUTIES

  • Summer Camp assistants are responsible to their Social Care Worker.

  • Full time Monday to Friday.

  • Help create an atmosphere which is fun, inclusive and promotes each child's participation in terms of choice and decision making and in which each child is enabled to reach their highest level of independence.

  • Assist in implementing agreed fun activity programmes for each child, ensuring that each individuals varying needs are met in a way that promotes dignity and respect for each person.

  • Work with the Social Care Worker to help ensure that each person is enabled to participate in activities which reflect their choice and interests.

  • Work with the Social Care worker to ensure that special equipment is used appropriately and maintained.

  • Summer Camp Assistants will be expected to display appropriate sensitivity while working closely with families, and the people we support.

  • Be responsible for the children’s safety while on the camp while ensuring they have a good time.

  • Summer Camp Assistants may be asked to work as the bus escort and should familiarise themselves with escort duties.

  • To supervise both volunteers and children during particular activities. Volunteers to be supervised at all times while with the children.

  • Direct involvement in risk assessment and managing child protection in conjunction with the Social Care Worker.

  • All incidents/ accidents / difficulties to be reported to the Social Care Worker and relevant documentation to be completed.

  • To attend allocated training days prior to/during the Summer Camp.

  • To co-sign and check any medication administration in association with the Social Care Worker.

  • This description is not restrictive and the post holder may be required to carry out other duties as requested by the Social Care Worker.

  • Ensure delivery of a quality service to each individual, providing personal assistance in all aspects of everyday living skills, carrying out any duties necessary to ensure the comfort and hygiene of the person we support.

Planning and Organising of Activities and Resources

  • The Summer Camp Assistant will work in consultation with the Social Care Worker with the implementation of Individual Programme Plans/programmes including play activities to promote and encourage the social, emotional and cognitive development which targets the individual needs of the child.

  • Have direct responsibility for the care and hygiene standards of activity rooms, camp area, bathrooms and toileting facilities.

  • Ensure that equipment, toys and furniture are maintained and in good order, and any breakages or damage must be reported to the Social Care Worker immediately.

  • Record and report on a daily basis contact messages etc to the Social Care Worker.

  • To take responsibility for the child/young person's effects, i.e. clothing, bags etc ensuring that they go home with them. Due care must be taken of all equipment, aids and appliances.

  • Maintain a disciplined and professional level of performance under sustained or situational pressure.

  • To provide challenging and enjoyable experiences so that all children can grow and develop as competent learners within loving and nurturing relationships with others.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Experience of working with children/young people or people with disabilities.

  • Would suit students who are currently studying Health and Social Care, QQI Level 5 Healthcare or Childcare.

  • Excellent communication, oral, written and interpersonal skills.

  • Team Working

  • Be able to communicate effectively.
